Amazigh Villages, Mountain Passes and a Sunset in Tizi Oussem

Your family adventure begins with a pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech.

We leave the city and drive south towards the High Atlas Mountains, arriving at Agersiouale, where you meet the local team who will accompany your family for the next four days.

Your local mountain guide Radouane will lead the trek, while our local chef Saïd joins the journey with his mule, Ghlama.

Additional mules accompany the group so that the children can ride during the hike whenever they become tired or simply want to enjoy the mountains from the back of a mule.

From Agersiouale, we begin hiking towards Tizi Oudid, following mountain trails through the traditional Amazigh villages of Tisgharine and Matat.

The trail takes us through a landscape of terraced agriculture, traditional houses and dramatic mountain slopes.

Some of the houses appear almost to cling to the mountainsides, creating a landscape that shows how generations of Amazigh families have adapted their lives to the High Atlas.

As we continue climbing, the landscape opens up and we reach Tizi Oudid at approximately 2,000 metres.

From here, you can look across one mountain valley towards another and appreciate the incredible diversity of the High Atlas landscape.

This is the perfect place to slow down.

While you enjoy the views, Saïd will already be ahead preparing lunch with his mule, Ghlama.

We sit together beside the old Atlas juniper trees, enjoy a freshly prepared Moroccan meal and take time to relax.

After lunch, we descend towards Id Aissa and continue to Tizi Oussem, our destination for the evening.

Tizi Oussem is a beautiful traditional mountain village surrounded by agricultural terraces and high peaks.

Tonight, we stay at Da Lhoussaine's family guest house, a simple and welcoming place where you can experience genuine mountain hospitality.

Depending on your preference, a traditional hammam can also be arranged.

Spend the afternoon relaxing on the terrace with Moroccan mint tea and popcorn while watching the sun set behind the mountains.

You may see local families working in the terraces, with cows and sheep nearby, giving you a glimpse into the everyday rhythm of mountain life.

Dinner is prepared by Saïd and served at the guest house.

After dinner, settle into your room and enjoy a peaceful night in the mountains.

Overnight: Family guest house in Tizi Oussem.

Day 2 — Tizi Oussem → Azib Tamsoult → Tizi Mazik → Imlil

Mountain Villages, Summer Pastures and the Imlil Valley

After breakfast, we prepare for another day of exploring the High Atlas.

We generally aim to leave around 9:00 am or earlier, depending on the weather and the family's pace.

We begin by walking through the streets of Tizi Oussem, surrounded by terraces and fruit trees.

Depending on the season, you may see apple trees, cherry trees, walnut trees and colourful mountain flowers.

From the village, we follow the trail towards Azib Tamsoult, a traditional summer settlement used by families from Tizi Oussem for seasonal grazing.

It is a beautiful place to explore and photograph, particularly for children who are seeing traditional mountain life for the first time.

From Azib Tamsoult, we take another trail towards Tizi Mazik, the highest point of the day.

The climb is gradual, and we take our time.

As we reach the pass, the landscape opens towards the Imlil Valley.

This is another beautiful place for lunch.

As always, Saïd will be ahead of us preparing the meal before the family arrives.

After lunch, we descend towards the Imlil Valley and our guest house in Achayn.

The views from this part of the valley are spectacular.

The Imlil area has long been an important base for mountaineering in Morocco and was famously described by some early European alpinists as the “small Chamonix of Morocco.”

Before heading back to the guest house, we make a short visit to a beautiful local waterfall.

Then Radouane will accompany your family into the centre of the valley, where you can experience a little of the local daily life, including the village market and the activity around Imlil.

But the evening has another special experience waiting.

Dinner With a Local Family

Tonight, Radouane invites your family to his own family home for dinner.

Rather than simply eating in a restaurant, you will sit together with a local family and experience a more personal side of Moroccan and Amazigh culture.

Share a traditional meal, enjoy conversation and learn more about family life, traditions and the way people live in the High Atlas.

For children, this can become one of the most memorable parts of the trip.

After dinner, we return to the guest house for the night.

Day 3 — Imlil Villages → Tizi n'Tamatert → Tamguist

Pine Forests, High Mountain Views and the Imnane Valley

After breakfast, we continue our family trek through the traditional villages around Imlil.

The trail passes through Targa Imoula, Tamatert and Aït Souka, giving you another opportunity to experience the village landscapes and traditional agricultural terraces.

We then leave the villages and follow a beautiful trail through the Atlas pine forest towards Tizi n'Tamatert.

The forest provides a completely different atmosphere from the open landscapes of the previous day.

As we reach the pass, we are rewarded with a panoramic view over the Imnane Valley.

Below us are traditional villages, agricultural terraces and some of the High Atlas's most impressive peaks.

Among them is Tachedirt, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in North Africa and a well-known base for mountain activities, including ski touring in winter.

We stop at a beautiful viewpoint for lunch.

Again, Saïd will have gone ahead with Ghlama to prepare the meal before we arrive.

Enjoy the food, relax and take your time to appreciate the mountain scenery.

After lunch, we follow the route towards Tamguist, where another local family is waiting to welcome us.

Mohamed and his family host us for the night.

Tamguist is quieter and more peaceful, making it a wonderful place to spend the final evening in the mountains.

Enjoy dinner, relax with the family and take in the peaceful surroundings.

Day 4 — Tamguist → Tinghrine → Tizi n'Agersiouale → Agersiouale → Marrakech

The Final Trail and a Relaxing Riverside Lunch

After breakfast, we begin our final day in the mountains.

From Tamguist, we follow a descending trail towards Tinghrine village, passing through the quiet landscapes of the Imnane Valley.

We then join a mountain trail towards Tizi n'Agersiouale.

The landscape continues to change as we approach the final section of our adventure.

From the pass, we descend towards Agersiouale, where our hiking journey ends.

Before leaving the mountains, we enjoy one final lunch beside the river.

This is a chance to slow down, let the children play, enjoy the sound of the water and reflect on the journey.

After lunch and some time to relax, our private driver meets us in Agersiouale.

We then begin the drive back to Marrakech.

Four days earlier, you arrived in the mountains as visitors.

Now you leave with new experiences, local connections and memories your family can share for years.

Meet Your Local Team

Radouane — Your Local Mountain Guide

Your guide, Radouane, is from the Imlil area and knows the surrounding valleys, trails and villages through years of experience in the High Atlas.

For him, this journey is not simply about following a trail.

It is about helping families understand the mountains, discover Amazigh culture and experience the villages from a local perspective.

Saïd — Your Mountain Chef

Saïd travels with the group and makes sure fresh meals are waiting for you throughout the journey.

He often moves ahead of the hiking group with his mule, Ghlama, so that he can prepare lunch before you arrive.

You finish your hike section, reach a beautiful mountain viewpoint and find a fresh Moroccan meal waiting.

This is one of the things that makes the experience different from a standard hiking tour.

Ghlama and the Mules

The mules are an important part of the journey.

They carry supplies and accompany the family throughout the trek.

Most importantly for families, children can ride the mules during sections of the trail when they become tired.
