A High-Altitude Trail Running Adventure Around Mount Toubkal
The Atlas Mountains are not only for trekkers.
For experienced trail runners, they offer one of the most demanding and rewarding multi-day mountain challenges in North Africa.
Inspired by the classic 6-day Toubkal trekking circuit, we designed a 4-day trail running expedition that combines performance, altitude adaptation, technical terrain, and authentic Amazigh culture.
This is the Toubkal Trail Running Circuit — fast, wild, and unforgettable.
4-Day Toubkal Trail Running Itinerary
Day 1 – Imlil to Tachedirt
Distance: 11.77 km
Approximate elevation gain: +1,000m
We start from Imlil (1,740m), the gateway to the High Atlas.
The trail climbs through walnut groves, traditional villages, and panoramic mountain paths before crossing towards the beautiful village of Tachedirt, one of the highest permanent settlements in the Atlas Mountains.
This first stage is designed for:
Progressive altitude adaptation
Smooth rhythm building
Enjoying mountain landscapes without excessive fatigue
Overnight in a local guesthouse in Tachedirt.
Day 2 – Tachedirt to Amsouzart via Tizi Likemt
Distance: 25 km
High mountain stage
This is a true mountain challenge.
We climb steadily towards Tizi Likemt Pass (3,555m), one of the most spectacular and remote crossings in the High Atlas.
The terrain becomes more technical and wild as we descend to Azib Likemt, a seasonal shepherd settlement, before continuing towards Amsouzart village.
This stage requires:
Strong endurance
Good pacing strategy
Mountain running experience
Overnight in a guesthouse in Amsouzart.
Day 3 – Amsouzart to Toubkal Refuge via Lake Ifni & Tizi n’Ouanoums
Distance: 17 km
Elevation gain: +2,069m
Elevation loss: -654m
This is the queen stage of the circuit.
We begin by running towards Lake Ifni, one of Morocco’s most beautiful alpine lakes.
From there, the serious climb begins:
The ascent to Tizi n’Ouanoums (3,664m)— steep, technical, and physically demanding.
With over 2,000 meters of elevation gain in one day, this stage tests both legs and mindset.
After crossing the pass, we descend to Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) for overnight.
This day prepares runners for the summit push.
Day 4 – Toubkal Summit (4,167m) & Descent to Imlil
Distance: 17.21 km
Elevation gain: +1,045m
Elevation loss: -2,460m
Early alpine start.
We climb towards the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167m), the highest peak in North Africa.
Reaching the summit after three demanding days is a powerful achievement.
After celebrating at the top, we descend back to Imlil through the Mizane Valley.
This final stage includes a long technical descent of over 2,400 meters, requiring concentration and strong quadriceps.
Transfer to Marrakech at the end of the program.
