Adj Summit 2-Day Hike from Marrakech: A 3,100m High Atlas Adventure

8 min read

If you are looking for a 2-day hike from Marrakech that takes you deep into the High Atlas Mountains, the journey to Adj Summit at approximately 3,100 metres is a beautiful way to experience the mountains beyond the usual day trips.

This two-day High Atlas trek starts in Imlil at 1,740 metres, the gateway to the Toubkal Massif. From Imlil, the trail climbs towards Tizi Mazik, crosses into the spectacular Azzaden Valley and continues to Tamsoult, where we spend the night in the mountains.

The following morning, we climb towards Tizi n'Tzikert before making the final ascent to Adj Summit, a beautiful high point at around 3,100 m.

Along the way, the route brings together Amazigh villages, old juniper trees, high mountain passes, terraced fields, remote valleys and wide views across the High Atlas.

For me, there is something particularly special about this route. I really enjoy reaching a summit above 3,000 metres, especially when the summit is part of a journey through quiet valleys and mountain villages rather than simply being the destination of a short excursion.

Why Choose a 2-Day Hike from Marrakech to Adj Summit?

If you have two days available during your stay in Morocco, a 2-day trek from Marrakech allows you to experience much more of the High Atlas than a short mountain excursion.

Instead of returning to Marrakech after a few hours, you spend a night inside the mountains.

The route takes you from Imlil to Tizi Mazik, through Azzaden Valley and Tamsoult, then towards Tizi n'Tzikert and Adj Summit.

The landscape changes throughout the journey.

You begin among Amazigh villages and cultivated terraces around Imlil. Higher up, the trail passes through juniper-covered slopes and mountain passes before descending into the red landscapes of Azzaden Valley.

Then, after a night in the mountains, the second day takes you above 3,000 metres.

The experience is designed for people who enjoy hiking, nature, quiet mountain trails and small-group adventures.

Groups are kept small, with a maximum of 6 hikers, allowing us to enjoy the route at a more personal pace.

Marrakech to Imlil: Entering the High Atlas Mountains

The adventure starts in Marrakech at around 8:30 am, when we pick you up from your accommodation.

From Marrakech, we drive approximately 64 km south towards the High Atlas Mountains, arriving in Imlil at around 1,740 m.

Imlil is one of the most important mountain villages in the region and one of the main starting points for High Atlas hiking and trekking in the Toubkal Massif.

Once we arrive, we prepare our equipment and meet the local mountain team.

The team can include a local mountain guide, a local chef and a mule to carry luggage.

Mule support is optional. If you prefer to carry your own backpack, that is also possible.

The chef travels with us and prepares fresh Moroccan meals during the trek, adding an important local element to the experience.

Day 1: Imlil, Tizi Mazik and Azzaden Valley

The first day begins with a steady ascent from Imlil towards Tizi Mazik at approximately 2,480 m.

The climb gains around 700 metres and takes us through the Amazigh villages of Arghen and Mazik.

Walking through these villages gives you a different perspective of the High Atlas. Instead of simply looking at the mountains from a vehicle, you move slowly through the landscape and see the terraces, houses and mountain paths that connect the communities.

As we climb higher, the scenery gradually opens.

The trail passes beneath some of the region's old juniper trees, which have adapted to the dry and rugged mountain environment.

The mountains become increasingly quiet as we leave Imlil behind.

Tizi Mazik at 2,480m

After the first major ascent, we reach Tizi Mazik, a mountain pass at approximately 2,480 metres.

This is a good place to stop, rest and enjoy the views.

One of the simple pleasures of this route is stopping for a fresh orange juice from Hassan, who has a small mountain stop near the pass.

For hikers who want to add an extra challenge, and depending on time and conditions, there is also the option to climb towards Tasghimout Summit at around 2,600 m.

After the morning's hiking, we stop for lunch.

Our local chef prepares a traditional Moroccan meal, giving us time to relax before continuing towards Azzaden.

Descending into the Azzaden Valley

After lunch at Tizi Mazik, we leave the pass and descend towards the spectacular Azzaden Valley, also known as the Red Valley.

The landscape changes noticeably as we enter the valley.

The slopes become more rugged and the colours of the mountains create a completely different atmosphere from the northern side around Imlil.

The valley is surrounded by dramatic peaks, mountain terraces and remote trails.

This part of the route is one of the reasons I enjoy this High Atlas 2-day trek. The trail takes us away from the busier routes and deeper into the mountain landscape.

We continue through the valley before beginning the final ascent towards Azib Tamsoult.

Tamsoult Refuge: A Night in the Mountains

Our destination for the evening is Tamsoult Refuge at approximately 2,250 m.

The approach is particularly beautiful, with terraced fields and high mountain landscapes surrounding the route.

In the background, the mountains around Aghzan and Tazaghart rise above the valley.

After arriving at the refuge, we settle in and enjoy dinner prepared by the local chef.

The evening is very different from being in Marrakech.

There are no busy streets, traffic or city lights around us.

On a clear night, the mountains become completely quiet and the stars can be spectacular.

For me, this is one of the pleasures of spending a night in the High Atlas: you are already inside the mountains when you wake up the following morning.

Day 2: Tamsoult to Adj Summit at 3,100m

The second day starts early.

We have breakfast at around 6:00 am and begin hiking at approximately 7:00 am.

Our first objective is Tizi n'Tzikert at around 2,800 m.

The early start gives us time to climb gradually, reach the summit, enjoy the views and make our descent towards Aremd later in the day.

Climbing towards Tizi n'Tzikert

From Tamsoult, the trail gains altitude towards Tizi n'Tzikert.

The terrain becomes increasingly rocky as we move higher.

The landscape also becomes more open, with wider views across the surrounding High Atlas peaks.

We continue upwards until reaching Tizi n'Tzikert Pass at approximately 2,800 m.

From here, the route becomes rockier as we begin the final ascent.

The Final Ascent to Adj Summit

From Tizi n'Tzikert, we follow the rocky terrain towards the summit.

The trail zigzags upwards as we gain the final metres of elevation.

The effort becomes more noticeable here, but so does the feeling that we are getting close.

Then the summit appears.

Adj Summit — approximately 3,100 metres.

Reaching Adj Summit at 3,100 Metres

After two days of hiking, we finally reach Adj Summit at approximately 3,100 m.

The summit stands at a beautiful position above the surrounding valleys and mountains.

This is the time to stop, enjoy the views and take in the landscape.

A summit shared. After two days of hiking from Imlil, reaching Adj Summit at approximately 3,100 metres is the highlight of the journey.

There is something special about reaching a summit above 3,000 metres on foot.

You have watched the landscape change gradually beneath your feet.

You started in Imlil among the villages and cultivated terraces.

You climbed to Tizi Mazik.

You descended into Azzaden Valley.

You spent the night in the mountains.

Then you climbed again towards Tizi n'Tzikert and finally reached Adj.

The summit feels like the natural conclusion of the journey.

For me, this is what makes Adj Summit in Morocco so rewarding.

I particularly enjoy reaching summits above 3,000 metres, but I also enjoy the journey required to reach them.

The villages, the valleys, the people, the food and the quietness of the mountains are all part of the experience.

Descending from Adj Summit towards Aremd

After enjoying the summit, we begin our descent.

We return towards Tizi n'Tzikert before taking a different trail towards Aremd village.

The descent offers another perspective of the mountains.

Eventually, we reach the lower valley and the river.

Here we stop for lunch and have time to relax after the summit climb.

The atmosphere beside the river is a welcome change after the rocky terrain at altitude.

From Aremd, transport takes us back towards Marrakech in the later afternoon.

What Makes This High Atlas Trek Special?

There are many ways to visit the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech, but a 2-day trek from Marrakech to Adj Summit gives you enough time to experience several different mountain environments.

The route combines:

  • Imlil at 1,740 m

  • Amazigh mountain villages

  • Tizi Mazik at approximately 2,480 m

  • Optional Tasghimout at approximately 2,600 m

  • Azzaden Valley

  • Tamsoult Refuge at approximately 2,250 m

  • Tizi n'Tzikert at approximately 2,800 m

  • Adj Summit at approximately 3,100 m

  • Aremd village

The journey is not only about reaching the summit.

It is about seeing how the landscape changes as you move deeper into the High Atlas.

A Small-Group Mountain Experience

We keep this High Atlas 2-day hike to a maximum of 6 people.

Small groups make a real difference in the mountains.

There is more flexibility with the pace, more opportunity to stop and enjoy the scenery, and more time to connect with the local environment.

The journey also includes the option of local mule support for luggage, a local chef preparing Moroccan meals and a local mountain guide leading the route.

If you prefer to carry your own backpack, the mule is completely optional.

Who Is the Adj Summit 2-Day Hike For?

This route is suited to hikers who want to experience the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco over two days rather than rushing through the region on a day trip.

It is a good option if you are looking for:

  • A 2-day hike from Marrakech

  • A 2-day trek in the High Atlas

  • A summit above 3,000 metres

  • Quiet mountain trails

  • Amazigh villages and mountain culture

  • A night in the mountains

  • Traditional Moroccan food

  • A small-group hiking experience

  • An alternative to the more crowded mountain routes

A reasonable level of hiking fitness is important because the route includes sustained climbs, descents and rocky mountain terrain.

Mountain weather can also change quickly at higher elevations, so suitable clothing, footwear and equipment are essential.

The exact route and timing can always be adjusted according to mountain conditions and the group.

Marrakech to a 3,100m Summit in Two Days

The journey begins in Marrakech and quickly leaves the city behind.

Within a few hours, we are walking through the mountain village of Imlil at 1,740 metres.

From there, the route climbs to Tizi Mazik, descends into Azzaden Valley and reaches Tamsoult for the night.

The following morning, we climb again.

Tizi n'Tzikert at 2,800 metres.

Rocky terrain.

Zigzags towards the summit.

And finally:

Adj Summit — approximately 3,100 metres.

Then comes the descent towards Aremd and the journey back to Marrakech.

For me, this progression is what makes the route memorable.

The summit is the highlight, but every part of the journey contributes to the experience.

Want to Summit Adj in One Day?

If two days in the mountains sounds too relaxed and you are looking for something considerably more challenging, there is another way to reach Adj Summit.

It is possible to attempt Adj Summit as a challenging one-day hike, starting early from Imlil and completing the ascent and descent in a single day.

This is a much more demanding mountain day, requiring strong fitness, a good hiking pace and the ability to handle a significant amount of elevation gain and descent.

If you would like to challenge yourself and summit Adj in one day from Imlil, you can read the full route here:

→ Adj Summit One-Day Hike — The Challenging Day

Whether you choose the two-day route or the demanding one-day challenge, Adj offers something special: the feeling of standing above 3,000 metres in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, surrounded by the mountains and valleys that make this region so unique.
