When travelers think of Morocco, they often imagine desert dunes, bustling souks, or the beaches of Essaouira and Agadir. But hidden just beyond Marrakech lies a completely different world — the High Atlas Mountains, where snow covers the summits from January to April. Here, you’ll find one of the most unexpected and rewarding adventures: ski touring in Morocco.
Skiing on North Africa’s Highest Peaks
The High Atlas range is home to Mount Toubkal (4167m), the tallest mountain in North Africa, as well as other iconic ski peaks like Akioud (4035m), Ouanoukrim (4089m), and Clocheton. Further east, the Tachedirt Valley and passes such as Tizi Likemt (3555m) open up long, spectacular ski runs. Skiers can even discover hidden gems like bouignouane 3882m, a summit known for its panoramic views and thrilling descents.
A multi-day ski tour here means climbing these impressive peaks in the morning, then carving down untouched snowfields in the afternoon. It’s a mix of adventure, altitude, and pure wilderness — an experience unlike anywhere else in the world.
Oukaïmeden Ski Resort – Morocco’s Winter Playground
Many travelers are surprised to learn that Morocco even has its own ski resort: Oukaïmeden, located just 70km from Marrakech. Perched at 2,600m with lifts going up to 3,200m, it is the highest ski resort in Africa. While it has been closed in recent years, there are plans for it to reopen in 2026. Oukaïmeden is a beautiful spot to spend a day skiing, enjoy Moroccan winter vibes, and stay in charming mountain chalets. It’s a fantastic introduction to skiing in Morocco before heading deeper into the High Atlas for multi-day ski touring adventures.
Base Camp – Toubkal Refuge
Most ski touring expeditions are based at the Toubkal Refuge (3207m), which serves as the hub for climbs to Toubkal, Akioud, and Ouanoukrim. The refuge offers simple but cozy lodging, hearty meals prepared by a chef, and a warm atmosphere for sharing stories with fellow adventurers after a long day on the snow.
A Personal Passion – Skiing with Radouane
I’m Radouane, one of the professional ski touring guides in Morocco, based in Imlil village, the gateway to Mount Toubkal. Skiing is not just my profession — it’s my favorite sport and a tradition I live every year. Leading ski touring groups into my hometown mountains has become a ritual, something I will keep doing forever.
Every season, I guide travelers from around the world to the most beautiful ski slopes of the Atlas. From the famous summits like Toubkal and Ouanoukrim to the hidden valleys of Tachedirt and Bouignaouane, I make sure my guests experience the very best of Morocco’s ski touring.

The ski season runs from January to April, with March and April offering the most reliable snow and stable weather. This is the perfect time to combine a ski adventure in the mountains with a cultural trip to Marrakech — you can ski at 4000m in the morning and enjoy mint tea in Jemaa el-Fna square by the evening.
