Backpacking in Morocco: The Ultimate 6-Day Toubkal Circuit via Lake Ifni

For hikers searching for a real adventure in North Africa, backpacking through the High Atlas Mountains is an unforgettable experience. Far from Morocco’s busy cities, the Atlas Mountains offer dramatic landscapes, remote valleys, authentic Amazigh villages, and high mountain passes that reveal the wild beauty of the region.
One of the most spectacular trekking routes in Morocco is the Toubkal Circuit via Lake Ifni, a six-day backpacking journey around the highest mountain in North Africa, Mount Toubkal (4,167 m).
Unlike the classic two-day summit climb, this circular trek explores hidden valleys, traditional mountain communities, and stunning alpine landscapes before reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal.
Starting and finishing in the mountain village of Imlil, this backpacking adventure takes you deep into the heart of the Atlas Mountains, passing through remote Amazigh villages such as Tachedirt and Amsouzart, and reaching the breathtaking high-altitude waters of Lake Ifni.
For adventurous travelers who enjoy carrying their own backpack and exploring remote mountain terrain, this trek offers one of the most authentic hiking experiences in Morocco.
Why Choose a Backpacking Trek in the Atlas Mountains?
Backpacking in the High Atlas is very different from typical guided tours. Instead of traveling with a full trekking team, hikers carry their own gear and move through the mountains at a natural pace while accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide.
This style of trekking offers a more immersive experience in the mountains.
During this six-day trek you will experience:
• Remote Atlas Mountain valleys
• Authentic Amazigh (Berber) villages
• High mountain passes above 3,000 meters
• Traditional shepherd trails
• The beautiful alpine waters of Lake Ifni
• The summit of North Africa’s highest peak
This trek is ideal for hikers who want both physical challenge and cultural discovery.
6-Day Backpacking Itinerary: Toubkal Circuit via Lake Ifni
Day 1: Imlil – Tizi n’Tamatert – Tachedirt
Your trekking adventure begins in Imlil, the main gateway to the High Atlas Mountains.
After meeting your local mountain guide, the trek begins with a steady climb toward the scenic pass of Tizi n’Tamatert (2,279 m). From the pass, you will enjoy panoramic views across the beautiful Imnane Valley.
The trail then descends into the valley toward the traditional Amazigh village of Tachedirt, one of the highest villages in Morocco.
Here you will spend the night in a simple guesthouse run by local families.
Distance: 12 km
Walking time: 5–6 hours
Accommodation: Local guesthouse
Day 2: Tachedirt – Tizi Likemt – Azib Likemt
Today is one of the most dramatic days of the trek. The route climbs steadily toward the high mountain pass of Tizi Likemt (3,555 m), offering spectacular views of the rugged Atlas landscape.
This remote route is rarely visited by tourists and is often used by local shepherds moving their flocks through the mountains.
After crossing the pass, the trail descends to the alpine grazing area of Azib Likemt, where shepherd huts and open mountain pastures create a truly wild setting.
Distance: 13 km
Walking time: 6–7 hours
Accommodation: Camp
Day 3: Azib Likemt – Amsouzart
Leaving the high pastures behind, the trail descends gradually through beautiful valleys toward the remote village of Amsouzart.
Located on the southern side of the Toubkal massif, Amsouzart is a peaceful Amazigh village surrounded by terraced fields and walnut trees.
This is a great opportunity to experience daily life in the Atlas Mountains and interact with local communities.
Distance: 11 km
Walking time: 5–6 hours
Accommodation: Local guesthouse
Day 4: Amsouzart – Lake Ifni
Today’s hike leads toward one of the most beautiful natural sites in the Atlas Mountains: Lake Ifni.
The trail climbs gently through a wide valley before reaching the turquoise waters of the lake, located at an altitude of 2,295 meters.
Surrounded by towering cliffs and rugged peaks, Lake Ifni is the largest mountain lake in the High Atlas and one of the most peaceful places to camp during the trek.
Distance: 10 km
Walking time: 4–5 hours
Accommodation: Camp
Day 5: Lake Ifni – Tizi n’Ouanoums – Toubkal Refuge
Today is a challenging but rewarding day as the trail climbs steeply toward the high pass of Tizi n’Ouanoums (3,664 m).
From the top of the pass, you will enjoy stunning views across the dramatic landscapes of the Atlas Mountains before descending toward the mountain refuge below Mount Toubkal.
The refuge is the main base for climbers attempting the summit.
Distance: 10 km
Walking time: 6–7 hours
Accommodation: Mountain refuge or Camp
Day 6: Mount Toubkal Summit – Return to Imlil
The final day begins early with a climb to the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,167 meters, the highest point in North Africa.
From the summit, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views stretching across the High Atlas Mountains and, on clear days, toward the Sahara Desert.
After celebrating your achievement, the trail descends back to Imlil, marking the end of this incredible backpacking journey.
Distance: 18 km
Walking time: 8–9 hours
